One evening, out of nowhere, the voice just rose on its own.
Some evenings in Châteauvieux, nothing is planned — and that’s exactly when things happen. Vahina curled up against my legs, the sky turning deep blue over the quiet airfield, and a line rising in my throat without me looking for it.
I had no guitar that night, no sheet music, no idea what I was about to sing. Just the terrace, the night settling slowly over the Hautes-Alpes, and a few guests still at the table, not expecting anything in particular. That’s often how real things happen: with no intention at all.
“You know I love you… you know it…” — the line came out just like that, a cappella, a little fragile, carried by the mountain silence. Vahina lifted one ear, then dozed back off against my leg, as if approving the melody.
That’s what a stay here really is: not a timed program, but moments that invite themselves in. A child falling asleep on their mother’s lap while a small plane comes home to land at Gap-Tallard. A dog snoring. A song written for no one in particular, that ends up belonging to everyone who was there that night.
The next day, the hike reclaims its place, Vahina leading the way for three or four hours on the trails around the house. But that improvised voice, that one evening, was enough to show the people there what I’ve been trying to offer from the start: a place where family, dog and sky share the space, without any one of them taking over.
