A Morning Walk with Vahina, Across the Wide Open Spaces of Châteauvieux
Vahina leads the way, ochre earth underfoot and Alpine peaks on the horizon.
Every morning, before Châteauvieux is fully awake, Vahina pulls me out onto trails of ochre earth that feel like they belong under a different sky. Here, the dog sets the pace, and the Alps keep watch in the distance.
It’s still early when Vahina tugs at her leash, impatient. She knows the path by heart, yet every morning she rediscovers it as if for the first time. She trots ahead of me, nose to the ground, ears up, and I let her lead the way.
At this hour, the landscape feels almost unreal. The trails of Châteauvieux wind across cracked ochre ground, scattered with low scrub and rock, a scenery that could pass for the great African savannah or the plains of a western film. And yet, one glance upward is enough to find the Alps again, still blue in the morning light, a reminder of exactly where we are.
It’s this contrast that makes every walk different: earth that seems to come from somewhere else, under a sky that belongs only to the Hautes-Alpes. Planes and paragliders taking off from the nearby Gap-Tallard airfield sometimes trace their silent paths above us, a quiet reminder that the sky, too, is part of this landscape.
Vahina couldn’t care less about any of that, of course. What matters to her is the scent of crushed thyme underfoot, a stone worth sniffing, an imagined hare behind a bush. But it’s exactly this total attention to the present, this simple joy of a dog out walking, that sets the tone for our mornings here — and yours too.
Because these trails aren’t reserved for Vahina alone. Our guests, with or without a dog, are welcome to lace up their boots and set off to discover this small corner of Alpine wild west, just steps from the B&B.
