Loulou’s Great Escape

At our dog-friendly B&B in Châteauvieux, walks don’t always end the way you planned. That day, Loulou was the one setting the agenda. First, a fence. Then, straight on to a neighbour’s vineyard. But the way back turned out far trickier than the way in.
Loulou has a little ritual before every bit of mischief. He pretends to be deeply interested in the grass, nose to the ground, very serious about it. In reality, he’s sizing up the fence out of the corner of his eye. That day he found the gap. He slipped underneath without a sound, and he turned up in the middle of the vine rows — visibly quite pleased with his discovery.
The trouble with Loulou is that getting in always seems simpler than getting out. Indeed, he wandered around for a while, hesitant. He was clearly looking for the spot that had let him through, but he couldn’t quite find it on the first try. That’s why it’s the kind of scene we film often, here at our dog-friendly B&B.
The Rescue
So I pulled out my phone to film the scene. Then I eventually walked over to help: “Come on Loulou, come over here?”
Then, we looked together for a spot where the fence seemed lower, him on his side, me on mine. Each of us cheered the other on in our own way. Eventually, he got it, and he slipped back under the other way — not without one last glance at the vines, as if he already regretted leaving.
That’s the kind of harmless little disaster that shapes our days in Châteauvieux. Nothing ever goes quite as planned, because there’s always a dog leading the dance. That’s exactly what a real dog-friendly B&B should offer: a freedom that overflows a little, one you learn to walk alongside rather than hold back.
