Mont Chauve, at the Edge

A bikejoring outing above Châteauvieux

That morning, like almost every day, Vahina and I set out for our bikejoring run above Châteauvieux. Destination: Mont Chauve, one of her favorite grounds, with its open ridgelines and sweeping view over the whole valley.

Vahina moves ahead of me with her usual confidence, hugging the ridge. Then, without warning, the ground gives way beneath her paws. She slips. For one second, I see her tip toward the void — right at the edge of the drop.

I call out to her. She catches herself, regains her footing, comes back to me. The ravine, meanwhile, stays right there, vertiginous, as if to remind us how much these mountains we love demand respect.

That’s part of life in Châteauvieux too: a raw beauty, never quite tamed. And a dog who, every day, teaches me to look at this land more carefully.

Key Takeaways

  • Mont Chauve’s terrain is spectacular but demanding, even for an experienced dog.
  • Bikejoring outings at Vahina-Paradis will always be guided and matched to the level of both dogs and owners.
  • Vigilance stays the first rule, even on the most familiar trails.
