The Spider Tree

L'arbre araignée

Vahina, nose to the ground, under the Spider Tree

Out here, an evening walk rarely goes quite as planned. Between a dog who sets her own agenda and a sky that keeps shifting above the airfield, every outing ends up with a story to tell.

That evening I was running on empty. The kind of tiredness that creeps into your arms and legs without warning, until you stop trusting your own balance. On the mountain bike, I felt the wheel slip out from under me mid-descent and thought I was about to end up on the ground.

Vahina hadn’t noticed a thing. She was too busy digging around the Spider Tree, that old trunk whose branches spread out like giant legs, chasing after some rodent with the total conviction of a husky who never doubts herself.

While she investigated, I caught my breath, legs still shaking, and looked up for a moment toward the sky over Gap-Tallard airfield — a good reminder of why we still head out even on the tired days.

The evening ride turned into a small nightmare for a few minutes. But we made it home together, safe and sound — her proud of her unsuccessful hunt, me relieved to still be standing. That’s life here too: evenings that go slightly sideways and still end up just fine.
